Sept 15 — Leading New Zealand poet Bill Manhire introduces a genre-busting session of his poems set to music at the Christchurch Arts Festival. He is joined by singer Hannah Griffin and pianist/arranger Norman Meehan. The trio received huge ovations at the Frankfurt Book Fair last year and they have made three recordings:Buddhist Rain, Making Baby Float, and These Rough Notes. Fletcher Building Festival Club, Market Square, The Arts Centre, Christchurch, NZ. $10 general admission 1-2 pm.
Sept 16 —Allan Gurganus‘ Local Souls (book of three novellas: “Fear Not,” “Saints Have Mothers,” and “Decoy”) releases for electronic devices (and hardbound Sept 23 or 26, depending on your source). The new novel is set in mythological Falls, NC, scene of his Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, now with high-speed Internet. It “mixes comedy and disaster in a jagged ratio that’s increasingly familiar to us all.”
